Peat profile sampler Wardenaar

05.09

The peat profile sampler, type Wardenaar, is an apparatus for sampling intact, undisturbed peat profiles in peat lands up to a depth of 1 meter.

The peat profile sampler consists of a rectangular stainless steel box casing, divided lengthwise into two halves, with very sharp specially shaped cutting edges at the base.

The handgrip hinging with both halves allows both halves to be pushed into the soil alternatingly.

Description

The peat profile sampler consists of a rectangular stainless steel box casing, divided lengthwise into two halves, with very sharp specially shaped cutting edges at the base.

The handgrip hinging with both halves allows both halves to be pushed into the soil alternatingly.

A clamp mechanism on the grip allows the profile to be clamped in the sampler when it is extracted from the soil.

A small diameter tube is fitted to break the suction of the sample.

Set consists of

  • Peat profile sampler
  • Tools
  • Lever beam with support
  • Hand pump
  • Accessories

Applications

  • Soil profile description and classification
  • Soil texture research
  • Undisturbed sampling
  • Root zone sampling
Profile samplers

The profile sampler differs from other sampling devices by taking a rectangular sample from the top layer. The device makes it possible to take a sizeable and virtually undisturbed sample. The roots, up to a diameter of 2 centimetres, are included in the sample. The sample is easy to remove, which reduces the risk of disturbance to a minimum.

Soil coring kit - chemical soil research

04.16

The soil coring kit for chemical research, for establishing the presence of volatile components in the soil, is suitable for augering down to a depth of 5 metres. This kit allows sampling for environmental research of soil containing volatile components. The method employed meets the NEN 5743 standard.

  • According to USA EPA 5035A
  • Can be hammered in hard soils
  • Prevents loss of volatiles during sampling and transport
  • Undisturbed sampling
  • No hassle in the field with methanol
Description

With our special coring kit, volatilisation and oxidation of components in soil samples can be prevented as much as possible. This is due to the fact that during sampling, the sample is pushed into the sample tube, after which the tube is shut off. This will optimally prevent volatilisation and oxidation of the soil sample. So the sample under no condition comes in touch with synthetic material. This method meets the NEN 5743 norm (soil or sediment sampling with volatile components). You can also combine it with the methanol method.

The sample has a volume of 226 millilitres. The set therefore also is suitable for the determination of volume percentages of humidity in samples from undisturbed soil. With this set it is possible to take samples to a depth of more than 5 metres.

The samples are taken with a small coring apparatus fitted with thin-walled stainless steel sample tubes. The sampling tubes are preferably pushed into the soil by hand, but a steel hammer with nylon heads can also be used.

After taking the sample, the sample tubes can be locked and cooled for transport to the laboratory. Here sub-samples can be taken from the sample tube, applying a small gauge or apple-corer. The samples can also be removed using an extruder. All the parts, except the caps, can be decontaminated over and over. After decontamination the equipment can be used again. Please note that this set is not suitable for stony soils.

Water samplers

Different samplers for water are included in Royal Eijkelkamp’s assortment. The difference is in the material and the way of sampling. This can be done by sampling the sediment while the water is flowing through the sampler, or by sampling a vertical column from the sediment in (still) water.

Rhizon soil moisture sampling set

19.21.SA

The complete Rhizon soil moisture sampler system supplies a range of miniature soil moisture samplers. The Rhizon samplers are used for repeated and reliable sampling of all dissolved components in the soil solution.

  • Unique sampler made of porous plastic material (PES)
  • Pot, cylinder, and column research
  • Minimal disturbance of hydraulic properties of the soil
  • Low dead volume < 0.5 millilitres
  • Minimal ion exchange capacity (less than soil)
Description

This unique sampler is made of porous plastic material (PES) and has standard 0.15-micron pores. The sampler is reinforced with wire and dissolved organic and inorganic matter will not be absorbed on the soil moisture sampler. A horizontal placement in moist soil is preferred. Water acts as a lubricant during inserting. Due to the minimal disturbance the soil will quickly settle, resulting in a good sampler-soil contact. Optional is co-extruded tubing (PE inside / PVC outside) 1 millimetre internal diameter, Luer-connectors and protective caps. This sampler type has a length of 9 centimetres and a diameter of 4.5 millimetres. For installation at greater depths, a standard sampler with PVC extension pipe can be used.

This set is ideal for studies on undisturbed soil columns and pots with plants, the standard Rhizon soil moisture samplers can be inserted through the wall. A sample is obtained by placing the sampler under vacuum, by using a vacuum tube or a syringe. During sampling, the pH value of the soil is not affected. The standard set can be extended with various accessories.

Notes

  • Please check the applicability for the type of analysis
  • Large organic poly-molecules/colloids are retained and that the plastic membrane may cause some sorption on organic substances

Van Veen grab

Variations available

The Van Veen grab is used for sampling disturbed sediment. This device is used with a rope/cable and is manually controlled. The Van Veen grab is available in four different capacities.

  • Fast indication of sediment type
  • Four sizes of Van Veen grabs available for every need
  • Inert stainless steel construction
  • Easy operation
Description

With the Beeker sampler, you can take undisturbed sediment samples in a fast and certain way from watery sediment to unconsolidated sand to a depth of 5 metres. Even in watery conditions, the sample will not be lost thanks to the closable cutting head. Using additional extension rods, sampling to greater depths is possible in certain cases. The Beeker sediment core sampler works almost the same way as a Multisampler / piston sampler, but with a lockable head with inflated membrane.

Method

The samples are taken in a transparent tube which allows you to make a clear profile description. The sampler has long sampling tubes of 1 metre. The piston can be operated directly with a rod, so that the sample can be pushed out of the sampler on site into a sample bucket. The apparatus is pushed or hammered into the sludge. To avoid compaction of the layers, a piston is held at a stationary position relative to the sludge. The sample can then be emptied into a clean stainless-steel bucket, or layer by layer in wide necked sample jar. It is not necessary to assemble and disassemble the apparatus with every new sample. This set comes in an aluminium transport case.

Extended set

In addition to the standard set (04.23.SA), an extended set (04.23.SB) is also available for sampling and discharging core samples with a length of 1 metre or 1.5 metres, in bucket or jars and to transport and divide in subsamples with water pressure. This set is suitable for sampling of submerged soils to a depth of 5 metres from very aqueous sediments to unconsolidated sand.

Grab samplers for sediment top layers

Grab samplers are used for taking disturbed samples from the bottom of lakes, rivers, etc. Various designs can be supplied that are cable or rod operated. This instrument is suitable for sampling in soft sediments, free from debris and plant growth.

Beeker sediment core sampler

19.21.SA

The Beeker type sediment sampler is rod-operated and has a closable cutting head and piston. This sampler is used for high accuracy sampling of very soft to medium hard sediment layers. A standard and extended set are available.

  • Takes samples fast and certain
  • Sample can be emptied into clean stainless-steel bucket, or layer by layer in wide necked sample jar
  • Soil profile description and classification
  • Contaminant free stainless steel body
  • Possible to hammer the sampler
Description

Easily collect samples at the bottom of lakes, rivers with the Van Veen grab. Simply open the jaws and take a ‘grab’ when reaching the bottom. When hoisting the rope up again the jaws will shut tight and the sample is taken. The Van Veen gab will give you a fast indication of the sediment type and is available in four different sizes. The stainless steel construction ensures that the Van Veen grab is strong and of high quality.

Method

The mode of operation of all Van Veen grabs is the same. At the surface the jaws are pushed open and kept in that position by a hook. To keep the hook in the right position the Van Veen grab should be sunk at a steady, not too high, pace. Both jaws are fitted with holes to allow air to escape during the sinking. If these holes were not there, the air would escape when taking the sample, which would result in interference with the sample. As soon as the jaws touch the bottom, the hook loosens its grip, so that, when hoisting the rope again the jaws will shut tight because of the leverage by the rods.

It is recommended to take at least 6 samples from every location and to base your conclusion on the total of the samples. This is especially important when the bottom is less regularly shaped and the bottom material consists of a mixture of materials.

Applications

Bed-load transportmeter, type Arnhem

04.32

The bed-load transportmeter, type Arnhem is a sampler, used to measure bed-load of coarse sand and fine gravel in rivers and in other watercourses.

  • Bed transport meter frame has a stabilising tail fin
  • Used for measuring bed-load of coarse sand and fine gravel
  • Mouth permits water and fines to flow through
  • Mouth shaped to keep initial water speed
Description

The bed-load transportmeter, type Arnhem is a streamlined sampler mounted in a frame. It consists of a mouth followed by a basket of fine wire meshing (width of the mesh is 300 μm). It is used to obtain samples of sediments and gravel rolling along the river bed.

The sharp decrease of the velocity in the wide sampling chambers causes the sediment material to settle there. The mouth allows water and fine particles to pass through and is shaped to maintain the initial water velocity. A tail fin mounted on the frame keeps the sampler in up-stream direction.

The results of the measurements are influenced by the shape of the bed (ridges, dunes, flat beds, etc.). For a successful measurement knowledge of the relief of the bed is essential. The sampler can be discharged on board using the sample trough.

Applications

  • Sediment transport research

Direct

The determination of the soil moisture tension (in hPa, mbar or cbar) in the soil is an important aspect of complete agricultural physical soil research. Our tensiometer makes it possible to determine the soil matric potential (and thereby the moisture content of the unsaturated soil), by direct measurement in the field.

Watermark soil moisture measuring system

14.27.01

The Royal Eijkelkamp Watermark soil moisture measuring system is used to read out soil moisture sensors that measure moisture tension in the soil. With this soil moisture measuring system, more accurate measurements are possible due to the more consistent distribution of the pores.

  • Low-cost measuring instrument
  • Results directly expressed as soil suction
  • Range allows measuring trees and dry crops
  • Also good for irrigation advice
  • No field maintenance of probes
Description

The measuring principle is similar to that of the gypsum block system. The special sensors however do not dissolve in the soil and have a more consistent distribution of pores so that more accurate measurements are possible.

The soil moisture sensors, which have a measuring range of 0-200 kPa (0 – 200 cbar), can be used individually or in combination with a PVC tube (in various lengths) for measuring the moisture tension. The condition for reliable measurements is the optimal contact between sensor and soil. Using the special auger the holes are pre-drilled so that the soil moisture sensors can be placed at various depths. The sensors are buried permanently and have an average life of 3-5 years.

By using a soil temperature meter the temperature measured can be set in the soil moisture meter allowing for temperature correction. The electrical resistance is converted by the soil moisture meter into moisture tension in kPa. The soil moisture sensors can be used as a replacement for tensiometers in most agricultural and landscape irrigation environments. If a series of soil moisture measurements is required the soil moisture sensors can be connected easily to a datalogger.

Applications

  • Irrigation research
  • Soil moisture measurements
Specifications

Measuring the soil moisture suction tension can be done through indirect means with a durable non-salt-sensitive block, equipped with an ‘open’ condenser. The isolation characteristics of this capacitor can be measured. With our equipment it is possible to derive and display the value of the suction.

Watermark soil moisture sensor - 22.4mm

14.27.05

The inexpensive and easy to install Watermark soil moisture sensor is a granular matrix soil moisture sensor to measure soil moisture tension between soil particles. This is relevant for plant growth and soil stability.

  • Proven stable calibration
  • Range of measurement from 0 to 239 cb (kPa)
  • Fully solid-state
  • Not affected by freezing temperatures
  • Internally compensated for commonly found salinity levels
  • Compatible with AC or DC reading devices
Description

Watermark sensors can be used as an economical and maintenance-free replacement for tensiometers in most agricultural and landscape irrigation environments. These sensors will not dissolve in the soil, are insensitive to salt and frost resistant.

They monitor the current situation in the soil. An alternating current is applied to a sensor that is sensitive to soil moisture tension. Due to the consistent pore distribution of each sensor, a reasonably accurate measurements will be gained, with a measuring range of 0 – 199 kPa (0 – 199 cbar).

The soil temperature measured can be set in the soil moisture meter (14.27.01) allowing for temperature correction. The electrical resistance is converted by the soil moisture meter into moisture tension in kPa.

Sand ruler

Variations available

This sand ruler is a disc made of transparent material with selected samples (standard graduations). The sand ruler is an excellent indicative aid in estimating granular composition. It is possible to classify the sand fraction by using the sand median.

  • Indicative aid in estimating granular composition
  • Indicative aid in determining particle size distribution
  • Made of transparent material
Description

An important quality of a soil (in a soil profile) is the grain size distribution or texture. Agricultural soil properties are greatly determined by the texture of a soil: for example the ease of tillage, the capillary conductivity of a soil, the available moisture, the permeability of a soil, compaction, rooting possibility, etc.

A sand ruler is a disc made of transparent material with standard (specimen) samples. It is an excellent indicative help in determining the particle size distribution or to estimate the granular composition.

Method

By using the sand median, it is possible to classify the sand fraction. A representative proportion of the sample to be tested is rubbed dry with the fingers in the palm of the hand. The sample is then placed in the hollow area in the center of the ruler. The average grain size is now judged by comparing the average grain size of the sample with the specimen in the ruler.

Available variations

  • 08.04.03 Sand ruler with 10 fractions.
    The sand ruler is divided into the following classes (in µm): 63, 90, 125 ,180, 250, 355, 500, 710, 1000, 1400, 2000.
  • 08.04.04 Sand ruler with 6 fractions.
The sand ruler is divided into the following classes (in µm): 63, 105, 150, 210, 300, 420, 2000.

This set is suitable for sampling of submerged soils to a depth of 5 metres from very aqueous sediments to unconsolidated sand.

pF determination

The PF curve shows the relationship between the soil’s moisture contents and suction. These moisture contents vary with the same suction and differ per type of soil. With the right equipment, the pF curve can be determined for each type of soil, which clearly shows the availability of water for that type of soil. We offer three laboratory devices to make a complete pF determination.

Aggregate stability

Soil structure is largely determined by the formation and presence of soil aggregates. These aggregates can disintegrate due to mechanical and physico-chemical forces and lead to pore clogging and infiltration reduction, resulting in water erosion and/or spraying. The ‘wet sieving method’ is the method to investigate aggregate stability against water erosion.

Air pycnometer

08.60

Air pycnometer according to Langer, complete set including a calibration block. The apparatus is suited for sample rings with a maximum diameter of 53 or 60 mm (max. height 51 resp. 40 mm) and has a measuring range of 0-115 cm3.

  • Determine the volumes of soil, water and air
  • Easy, quick and accurate way to determine volumes
  • Based on use of volumetric soil sample rings
  • Can be used for non-porous materials as well
  • Simple calibrations
  • Use of soil sample rings is not required
Description

The vacuum air pycnometer has been designed to determine the volume and density of solid material, such as soil samples. It can be applied in every field where it’s important to calculate a specific weight, such as soil research, powder- and granulate investigations for the pharmaceutic industry, road building, brick factories, and the food industry (coffee, leguminous plants, etc.). The apparatus is especially useful to measure the volumes of irregularly shaped objects.

The principle

An under pressure is created in the vacuum bell that the object to be measured is placed in. Depending on the gas volume present in the bell, more or less air will be extracted. The quantity of the air present is independent of the volume taken by the object to be measured. After the under pressure has stabilised, the volume of the object can be read from the calibrated scale.

Remarks

  • Uses mercury (enclosed)

Applications

The pycnometer can be applied wherever knowing a specific weight is desired:

  • In soil research, such as the determination of the porosity of soil samples. It is recommended to use soil sampling rings with a 100 cc contents when taking undisturbed soil samples.
  • Powder- and granulate research in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Measuring the pore volume of tarmac (road construction) or clay and bricks (brickworks)
  • Volume determinations of seeds, coffee beans, legumes, etc. in the food industry
  • Laboratory soil density measurements

Limitation: Temperature variations influence the measurements (can be prevented by climate control in the laboratory).

Scuba BGA

11.11.69

The Scuba BGA is a floating, solar-powered sensor buoy designed to provide early warning of harmful algal blooms, turbidity and other water contaminants.

  • Early warning of algal blooms
  • No water sampling needed
  • Solar-powered
  • Quick deployment
  • Low entry costs
  • Action alerts
Description

The Scuba BGA (for Blue-Green Algae) is designed to monitor water quality, specifically algae, temperature, and turbidity. Real-time insights in these parameters will help to take action in time and prevent larger algae problems. Custom alerts will notify you when levels have gotten too high.

Sensor technology

By continuously monitoring the water, the Scuba BGA eliminates the need for manual water sampling and spot checking. This device uses the fluorescence of the pigments in algae and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) with this it detects the abundance of organism. Chlorophyll-a, present in all algae and cyanobacteria, is the most commonly used indicator of algal growth. Phycocyanin, typically present in freshwater cyanobacteria, is used as an indicator of blue-green algae. The Scuba BGA uses an excitation wavelength of 420 nm for chlorophyll-a and 575 nm for phycocyanin. The measured peak emission wavelengths are 670 nm and 642 nm, respectively.

Power and data transfer

Thanks to the integrated solar panel, the Scuba BGA is self-powered and can continue to operate for up to a year as long as the water does not freeze. Fully charged, it can function for 2-3 weeks without sunlight. The data collected by the Scuba BGA is sent to a web portal via 4G cellular tehnology. This system automatically switches between three carrier waves to optimise reception. It’s truly an all-in-one system complete with sensors, power supply, data monitoring trackers, and a powerful dashboard. The dashboard also tracks the GPS coordinates of your devices so you’ll always know where it is.

The buoy is suitable for both fresh and salt water and equipped with a built-in sensor wiper, to keep the sensor clean and functional.

Installation of the buoy is easy; simply place it in a waterway, connect it to an anchor (available separately) and it will automatically start collecting data.

The instrument measures the following parameters:

  • Green algae via chlorophyll-a | 0-200 μg/L or 0-2,000 RFU
  • Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) via phycocyanin | 0-1,500 μg/L or 0-750 RFU
  • Sunlight, wind & rain
    • Air temperature | 0-50 °C
    • Water temperature | 0-50 °C
    • Ambient light | 0-2,000 PAR
  • Turbidity | 0-200 NTU
  • GPS coordinates | All
